Welcome to Conner Street Elementary

We are located at 445 Conner Street in Hurricane, West Virginia. We have 365 outstanding students in grades pre-K through fifth. Our Principal is Ms. Kristi Barker. We have twenty-two amazing classroom teachers, six fantastic classroom aides, three exceptional custodians, two caring secretaries, and three wonderful cooks. Our school was built in 1966 and a new addition was added in 2013. We are fortunate to be a Leader in Me school. We believe in educating the whole child. We believe that all students can learn and that we can be successful at teaching all students. We welcome parent and community involvement because we believe that together we can achieve more. Please visit our website to learn about the exciting things happening at Conner Street Elementary School!

Principal’s Message: Happy New Year! I’m so proud of all of the books our students are reading! Many students have earned AR points and prizes for the month of December. If you want your child to become a lifelong reader, please make reading part of your daily routine. Read every night for 15 minutes. Let them hear you read aloud to them and let them see you reading. It will make a difference! If you need to speak with me, please contact me at kbarker@k12.wv.us or 304-562-9351 ext. 2211. Thanks, Ms. Barker

Dressing for Cold Temperatures:
Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cold temperatures. Even in winter months, we sometimes have to practice fire drills and may have to be outside for unexpected events. No shorts or flip flops should be worn at this time (even with knee socks). Students who walk to and from school really need gloves, heavy winter coats, and hats. If you need assistance providing these things for your child, please send a note to school (attention: Ms. Barker). Also, we will be going outside for recess when it is 40 degrees+.

Pre-K Registration for 2019-2020

American Academy of Pediatrics Sleep Recommendations: (aap.org) Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health. Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
*Adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression.
*AAP suggests that all screens be turned off at least 30 minutes before bedtime and that TV, computers and other screens not be allowed in children's bedrooms.
Please be sure your children are getting adequate sleep because it impacts them very much at school!
